Just in time for National Olive Day is the Comet, as described in the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book and invented by Dorothy Perosino.

The Redsmith Comet gin cocktail recipe:

  • 50 mls Redsmith Aranceto Dry Orange Gin
  • 50 mls Lillet Blanc
  • 2 dashes of Maraschino

Mix icy cold, strain and garnish with a nice plump olive.

The first of June is National Olive Day, and of course olives have garnished many a fine cocktail, the most famous being the dry Martini.

A mix of orange gin, Lillet Blanc, Maraschino and of course garnished with an olive. The result is perfectly balanced and also complex with the olive adding an intriguing savoury bite. The dry orange gin is sweetend in a luxurious way with the Lillet Blanc.

This version of the Comet seems to have been completely superceded by the later cocktail with the same name dating from 1952 invented by Eddie Clarke in honour of the pioneering jet airliner, the DH Comet.
